CONS

  • Not for power gamers
  • low battery life

Summary

The HP Pavilion g6 is aimed at the casual gamer who needs a decent multimedia laptop under Rs 45,000. However, the G6 is not a full blown gaming machine and cannot run all latest games at highest settings. The laptops comes with all the latest multimedia features and is built well. The low battery life and cramped keypad are some basic issues that keeps the G6 away from being a recommended laptop in its category.

    • REVIEW

The HP Pavilion g6 is a mainstream multimedia laptop that pits itself against the likes of the Acer Aspire 5740G and the popular Dell Inspiron 15R series. Powered by Intel Core i5processor along with the latest AMD Radeon HD 6470 mobility GPU, the Pavilion g6 is capable of handling gaming as well. The newer HP Pavilion g6 models are expected to ship with the second generation Intel Core i3 & Core i5 sandy-bridge processors, while the review unit is shipped with the first generation Core i5 processor from Intel. The g6 seems to be positioned as a product that has something for everyone, it has multimedia features, gaming capability and good processing power under its hood to be a future proof investment, the question is, how well does it perform as an all rounder? Lets find out!

Non-review model with glossy red finish on the contours of the keypad and palm-rest

    Look and Feel

The Pavilion g6 comes with a glossy charcoal-grey finish on the lid, with a predominant HP logo etched on it. The glossy black finish on the keypad and the body contours surrounding it, adds a nice contrast with the charcoal grey finish on the areas engulfing the palm-rest and the contours of the keypad. The lack of dedicated numpad keys and the combining of function keys with multimedia control keys is a slight letdown. However, the g6's keypad offers good feedback and yielded satisfactory typing experience. The trackpad features gesture based pinch-zoom functionality, which allows you to zoom-in and zoom-out while reading content on the webpage. The trackpad isn't the best that we have seen on this range of laptops, there were times when the response and precision was lacking.
    Features

The Pavilion g6 ships with some interesting apps like snipping tool, which allows you to capture screenshots of the selected area on the desktop, save or edit the snapshot (called a snip), e-mail the selected snip to your friend. In addition, it comes pre-installed with Magic Desktop software, which will allow you to work on another virtual desktop, where you can lock access to your files and settings by assigning a master password. The Magic software also allows you to dynamically switch back to your regular Windows desktop by going to the Menu >> settings. Thereby one user can have multiple desktop settings for home and office user.

    Performance

The Pavilion g6 definitely out runs its nearest rival - MSI FX600 across most of the synthetic benchmark tests including the PC Mark Vantage and Maxxon CineBench R11.5. The G6 clearly outruns the FX600 in the PC Mark Vantage gaming benchmark with a score of 4538 points against FX600's meagre 3107 points. However on the flip side, the g6's powerful configuration yields poor battery-life, which is less than an hour. The other notable exceptions are that the FX600 scored much better than the g6 in the 3D Mark 2006 benchmark and speaker quality test, which is quite surprising. The gaming benchmarks yielded almost neck to neck scores with the g6 scoring 37.01fps in Farcry 2 and 121.5fps in the Doom 3 test, while the FX600 scored 38.29fps and 108.6fps respectively. Overall, the performance scores tilt the scales heavily in favor of the Pavilion g6, which comprehensively outplays the FX600.

    Our Take

The HP Pavilion g6 is a strong performer in the sub Rs. 45,000 price category. A decent gaming performance across Doom 3 and Far Cry 2 benchmarks and coupled with the feature-rich configuration, it makes a strong statement. The g6 is aimed at the casual gamer, who needs a decent multimedia laptop under Rs. 45,000. However, the G6 is unsuitable for high-end gamers who love to play the game at its highest resolution with full 3D visual enhancements and anti-aliasing turned on. The G6 can only give you a decent gaming experience at medium graphic details with anti-aliasing disabled.

    Drive helps kill Microsoft's Offic

How Google's Drive helps kill Microsoft's Office

This is how a search company can steal the productivity business: By storing work, not helping users edit it.

Google's hard drive in the sky, Google Drive, is a big threat to other cloud storage products likeDropbox and Box. But it's also a stab straight at the heart of Microsoft's mainstream business software, Microsoft Office.
While Google's productivity application suites, Docs (now incorporated into Drive) and Apps (for businesses), have been making some headway into Microsoft Office's territory, the important battlefield is not the application. It's the data. If Google can move the battlefield to a place where it has the bigger army and better weapons, the whole game changes. Google Drive might make that happen.
Let's look at the world from behind Google-colored glasses. Every time a user performs a search in the Google search engine, or clicks a link in Chrome, or +1s an item in Plus, Google adds an atom of data to its knowledge of what people like and what they do. This information helps Google index the Web and rank its results when people are searching for something. This is also the Facebook model, by the way.

The Google Drive 'Open with' feature can help you steal your data away from old desktop apps. Google Drive launch partner Pixlr shown.

Moreover, every action that generates user data that doesn't touch down in a Google product or service deprives Google of information that it could otherwise use to index and understand the Web of human knowledge and preference. Microsoft Word documents stored on PCs? In the most uncharitable view, every one is money being stolen from Google.
All closed, siloed apps, for that matter, remove opportunity from Google. Co-founder Sergey Brin has recently spoken out against apps and companies that wall off data from the open Internet. There is indeed a danger, but it's not just about openness, it's about Google's own ability to index the data.
Back to Google Drive: By acting as the substrate for user data -- in other words, the file system -- Google gets exposed to many times more information. Google doesn't need, and in fact has no reason, to make this data public, but having it available to index and cross-reference does make the company's core service, targeted advertising, more valuable.
The more data Google has, the more valuable its product becomes. And that product, in case it's not already clear, is you. Your attention, which is sold to advertisers.

Microsoft's main product, meanwhile, is software, not data. (And its customers aren't advertisers, but people who buy software.) So why can't Microsoft's model and Google's live in harmony? Because Microsoft's software suite consists of application software and an operating system, and the operating system stores user data, and the data is what Google wants. So Google is undermining that function with Google Drive, and not just by offering a synchronized file system (which, by the way, Microsoft also offers). Once users put their data in Google Drive, they will also find out how easy it is to open these files in non-Microsoft apps. This is one of the reasons Google is launching Google Drive with an API for developers and a suite of partner products that shave off Microsoft customers a bit at a time.
One of the most important features that third-party developers are using with Google Drive is the "Open with" feature. If you upload a Microsoft Project file to Drive, for example, you can open it with the Web app SmartSheet, directly on the Web. Similarly, Web apps like SlideRocket can open PowerPoint files. Google's own productivity apps can also open Microsoft files.
The more people realize that they don't need Office to access their archives of files from the pre-Google Drive era, the more likely they are to look to Google Drive (or perhaps competing products, if they have similar partners) as primary storage. And Google wins, while Microsoft loses.
How can Microsoft counter this market erosion at Google's hands? The company has its own cloud storage product and a strong history with developers. And it has the business customers. But according to a Google Drive developer I spoke with, one who's been dealing also with Microsoft for years, Microsoft is not there yet. It has the centralized storage in SkyDrive andOffice 365, but not the infrastructure -- especially the identity and sign-on tools -- that developers need to integrate into the Microsoft cloud.
Microsoft also needs to protect its software licensing revenue for Office. Google, the upstart in business software, can undercut Microsoft's prices since all its software sales are incremental on top of its search and advertising businesses.
Other companies realize that whoever controls the data controls the market. Box, for instance, just launched OneCloud, which lets you open documents in a variety of apps. It's mobile-only so far, though.
It is no longer a PC world, and because of that Microsoft doesn't own the world of work. People do their jobs on their own computers, on the Web, and on mobile devices; and they expect their work to follow them onto whatever hardware they're using. Every major technology company understands this. But only a few have the products, the infrastructure, and the freedom to get ahead of the shift.

Windows 8 reportedly set for October debut

Windows 8 reportedly set for October debut

Bloomberg reports that Microsoft will release the final version of the upcoming operating system to manufacturers this summer, leading to a pre-Christmas launch.

Microsoft reportedly will finish work on Windows 8  by summer, setting the stage to release the next version of its flagship operating system sometime around October.
Bloomberg, citing "people with knowledge of the schedule," also reports that there will be fewer than five devices running the ARM system-on-a-chip architecture  at launch. Those ARM chips allow for thinner, lighter tablet  devices, something that Microsoft hopes will help it cut intoApple's iPad 's huge lead in the tablet market. The Cupertino rival just disclosed that it sold more than 3 million of its latest iPad since the third-generation gadget debuted Friday.
The report confirms the timing that most analysts have been expecting. Bloomberg notes that Microsoft will lay out the details of the release schedule at an industry event in early April.
A Microsoft spokeswoman declined comment on the report.
Last month, Microsoft said it planned to release a version of Windows 8 on ARM chips at the same time it launched Windows for the x86 chips that power traditional PCs. In a blog post at the time, Windows President Steven Sinofsky said "our collective goal is for PC makers to ship [Windows on ARM devices] the same time" as more conventional Windows PCs debut.
Having fewer than five devices, though, would offer consumers only slight alternatives to Apple's hugely popular iPad. That said, some Microsoft partner may also make tablets running x86 chips, though those devices would likely be bulkier than iPads and the ARM-powered Windows 8 gadgets.
Bloomberg also reported that more than 40 computers running the x86 architecture will be ready for the Windows 8 launch.

    The royal visit to RIM

    the Queen visits RIM
Earlier this week Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth ll and His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Phillip honoured Research In Motion® (RIM) with a visit to our manufacturing facility here in Waterloo, Ontario.
The royal couple was greeted by Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, RIM President and Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis, local dignitaries and hundreds of cheering admirers. After donning their smocks, the Royal Couple was taken on a tour of the manufacturing facility.
(In case you were wondering, everyone who enters onto RIM’s manufacturing production floor needs to wear an electrostatic discharge smock and footwear to help eliminate potential electrostatic charges that can be carried on clothing – even small electrostatic charges could damage the circuit board used in the BlackBerry® smartphones when they are being manufactured.)
During the tour, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh had the opportunity to see how the BlackBerry® Bold™ 9700 smartphone is made, and to speak with some RIM employees as well.
When the tour concluded, Mike Lazaridis presented The Queen with a white BlackBerry Bold 9700 smartphone and The Duke of Edinburgh received a black BlackBerry Bold 9700 smartphone.

The Queen’s BlackBerry smartphone included a picture of children from the Queen Elizabeth Public School in Kitchener, Ontario. The children were all holding flowers and standing in front of a school sign with the message “Q.E. students welcome the Queen to KW”.
The crowd certainly seemed pleased to see The Queen, and I know RIM employees and executives were excited to be able to host this part of her visit to Canada!
